Sparking outlet — when to call an electrician
A brief spark when you plug something in can be normal contact. Ongoing sparks, a burning smell, heat, or scorch marks are not. Treat that outlet as unsafe until a licensed electrician says otherwise.
Do this first
- Stop using the outlet. If sparks are still flying, do not touch the plug or faceplate.
- Red Cross: if you see sparks, broken or frayed wires, or smell hot insulation, shut electricity at the main fuse box or breaker, only from a dry path. Do not step in water to reach the panel; call an electrician if you cannot (Red Cross: Checking Your Home’s Utilities).
- Once that circuit (or the main) is off and the outlet is quiet, leave devices unplugged. Do not tape over it and keep using it.
- Smoke, flame, or wall heat → leave and call 911. Fire first; hire after the scene is clear.
When to call an electrician
Call for repeated sparks, buzzing, a hot or discolored faceplate, sparks with nothing plugged in, or a breaker that trips after the outlet arcs. Do not DIY the receptacle if you are not licensed. Hidden wiring may be the real fault.
Is a sparking outlet an electrical emergency?
Ongoing sparks, a burning smell, or hot outlets qualify. Call a licensed electrician. Smoke or flame: leave and call 911 first. After the scene is safe, open our list, pick a row with a phone, and call. We list operators. We do not book. More on who to call: No power and How to hire.
