Hiring questions
Questions to ask a Portland electrician before you book
An Oregon electrical company needs two licenses from two state agencies. Ask for both numbers on the first call, then ask who the state licenses on the crew.
Licenses
- What is your CCB number? Oregon requires it on contractor advertising. (CCB guide)
- What is your BCD electrical contractor license number? Electrical work needs it on top of the CCB license. (BCD) In the state's license data it shows as "C-Electrical Contractor." (Oregon open data)
- Who on the crew holds an individual license, such as a General Supervising Electrician (S) or a Limited Maintenance Electrician (LME)? Those codes appear in the same BCD data. (Oregon open data)
- Which CCB endorsement do you carry? Residential general means a $25,000 bond; residential specialty, $20,000. (CCB bonds) Each tier also has a per-occurrence insurance minimum set by rule, so ask to see the certificate. (OAR 812-003-0221)
Do you need to hire at all
Oregon lets owners do electrical work on residential or farm property they or their immediate family own, if it is not meant for sale, exchange, lease or rent. (ORS 479.540) If you rent the place out or plan to sell, hire licensed.
The job
- Will you take out the electrical permit?
- Can you make it safe tonight and quote the rest for daytime?
- Will I get a written contract? Oregon requires one for jobs over $2,000. (CCB)
Money
- Do you charge to come out, and what changes on a night or weekend call?
- Will you bill by the hour or quote one flat price? Get the answer in writing before work starts.
Look them up
Search the CCB number at search.ccb.state.or.us and read any complaints, then the electrical license in the BCD license search. A CCB license gives you access to CCB mediation if the job goes wrong. (CCB) Full steps: how to check an Oregon electrician.
