How to check an Oregon electrician's license

Two searches, one at the CCB and one at the Building Codes Division, tell you whether an Oregon electrical company is licensed to take your job.

1. Search the CCB

Use the CCB search with the company name or number. Note the endorsement and status, and read any complaints. Oregon requires the CCB number on contractor advertising. (CCB guide)

2. Search BCD

Electrical work also needs a BCD electrical contractor license. (BCD) In the BCD search or the state's open license data, you will see codes such as:

  • C: Electrical Contractor (the business license).
  • S: General Supervising Electrician (an individual).
  • LME: Limited Maintenance Electrician (an individual).

3. Know what the bond and insurance cover

CCB bonds run $25,000 for a residential general contractor, $20,000 for residential specialty and $15,000 for residential limited. Insurance runs $500,000, $300,000 and $100,000 per occurrence. (CCB, read Oct 17, 2026) (ORS 701.081, read Oct 18, 2026)

4. Decide whether you need a contractor at all

Owners can do electrical work on residential or farm property they or their immediate family own, if it is not meant for sale, exchange, lease or rent. (ORS 479.540) For anything you pay for, hire licensed.

5. Put it in writing

Jobs over $2,000 need a written contract in Oregon. A CCB license also gives you access to CCB mediation if the job goes wrong. (CCB, read Oct 17, 2026)
